HERONS - EGRETS - STORKS

Herons, egret, and storks are among the most iconic birds of our mangrove ecosystems. Their long legs, patient hunting strategies, and colonial nesting behaviours make them a defining presence in the tidal creeks and shallow waters of the Indus Delta. Ten species have been recorded within the project area, all serving as visible indicators of fish abundance and wetland health. All ten species are classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat Mangrove forests, dense reedbeds, freshwater wetlands, estuarine channels, and coastal scrub, roosting communally by day.
Diet Fish, crustaceans, frogs, insects, and small birds caught during crepuscular and nocturnal foraging bouts.

Habitat Open grasslands, agricultural fields, mangrove margins, and coastal scrubland near grazing animals.
Diet Insects, grasshoppers, lizards, frogs, and earthworms disturbed by grazing animals or agricultural machinery.

Habitat Tidal mudflats, mangrove creek banks, open coastal wetlands, estuarine shallows, and freshwater marshes.
Diet Fish, frogs, small mammals, reptiles, and large invertebrates caught by motionless ambush or slow stalking.

Habitat Mangrove creek edges, small ponds, paddy fields, coastal ditches, and any shallow wetland with cover.
Diet Fish, frogs, crabs, insects, and small invertebrates caught at close range from a hunched, camouflaged posture.

Habitat Tidal mudflats, shallow mangrove creeks, estuarine edges, freshwater pools, and coastal wetlands.
Diet Small fish, shrimps, frogs, aquatic insects, and worms caught using active foot-stirring and rapid strike techniques.
